CENTRAL IOWA DAYLILY SOCIETY

Welcome

We invite you to join the Central Iowa Daylily Society. CIDS was created by people passionate about daylilies, and our mission is to promote Daylilies through education and community outreach. We are a non-profit organization open to the public and pursue our mission through public meetings, auctions, and tours of member gardens. This provides a warm community in which CIDS members benefit from the experience and friendship of their peers.

Meetings

We meet seven times annually. Prominent hybridizers who represent large breeding programs have spoken to CIDS as well as hybridizers just beginning to get attention in the daylily world. Speakers have included Curt Hanson, Patrick and Grace Stamile, Dan Hansen, Steve Moldovan, Lee Pickles, Dan Bachman, Bret Clement, Bill Maryott, Phil Korth and Linda Michaels. Richard Norris and Paul Owen will be speaking at our 2010 Pollen Dabbers Gathering on March 27.

Auctions

Two CIDS auctions are held annually. The spring auction offers newer cultivars by nationally known hybridizers. Our fall auction is supported by generous donations from members of cultivars that have proven their garden value in Iowa’s zone 4 climate. Our auctions represent the best of both old and new, so no matter what your taste, you will always find something for your garden.

Tours

The Annual club tour is a highlight of our summer activities. We usually visit from three to five member gardens during peak bloom, and enjoy a day of daylily fellowship. Of course, the public is always invited to attend.

American Hemerocallis Society Display Gardens
A number of member gardens are American Hemerocallis Society (AHS) Display Gardens. This is a distinct honor, and makes these gardens excellent starting points in the education of the novice daylily
grower. These gardens are also a great place for experienced gardeners to observe varieties they are thinking of adding to their collections.

Hybridizing

Active hybridizers in our club provide a wealth of information and inspiration to novice gardeners as well as those who have been digging in the dirt a while. And if you are lucky, you will be around when
they’re ready to move some old things out in preparation for new seedlings.

An Eight Dollar Investment

It’s hard to believe that a membership is only $6 annually ($8 for couples). These days, few good things cost so little, yet offer so much.

Volunteer Opportunities

As an active club we welcome volunteers. Our members volunteer at our two annual public sales (in spring and fall), and at times assist elderly members with heavier seasonal gardening chores. If you’re interested, please contact one of the club members listed below.
